A Little Bit About Us
As the name implies, MBSI has members
throughout the world. They are dedicated to fostering an
interest in the collection and enjoyment of antique musical boxes
and preserving them for future generations. Our definition of
"musical box" is broad. It includes traditional music boxes
producing music by the vibration of teeth in a tuned steel comb;
reproducing pianos; reproducing organs; pre-electric phonographs;
musical automata and stringed, wind and percussion instruments of
any kind adopted to be played automatically, whether driven by hand
or by mechanical or electrical sources of power.
The Southeast Chapter of MBSI was
established in1978. Our chapter covers Florida, Alabama,
Georgia, and Mississippi. However, members from other
states who visit Florida periodically and want to be able to attend
a chapter meeting while they are in the area are also welcome.
Most of our meetings are scheduled
in Florida. We also occasionally participate in joint meetings with
our neighboring chapters. Meetings typically include several
of the following:
- one or more open houses to view
other members' collections,
- a mart where members can buy
and sell mechanical music related items,
- an
educational presentation,
- and a tour of area
attractions.
Members receive at least three
chapter newsletters and three meeting announcements per year.
Southeast Chapter dues are $5.00 per
family per year. Being a member of our parent organization is
required for chapter membership. You do not need to have a
mechanical music collection to join. All you need is an
interest in learning more about them. See the "Join MBSI" tab for more
information.
